In the early 1990s there were several active singles groups in Siouxland for the divorced, widowed and never married.  However, a common complaint was that there was no special place for adult singles to mingle.

“People didn't like going to bars to meet people," was a common complaint.  In January 1997 a group of singles formed a committee and begin hosting dances for adult singles.  The name SiouxLand Singles was chosen and a board of directors from the volunteer committee was formed. The first dance was held in April 1997 at the Sioux City Convention Center in Sioux City, Iowa.  Approximately 250 people were in attendance. Admission was $7.00.

In the next years dances were held at various locations throughout Siouxland, including the Sioux City Convention Center, the South Sioux City Convention Center, the Marina Inn and the Hinton Community Center.
These dances were unique as they were hosted in a non-smoking atmosphere.

Support was received from area singles groups, including Single Sailors of Storm Lake, Iowa; Omaha Christian Singles of Omaha, Nebraska; Parents without Partners of Sioux City, Iowa; Singles with Spirit of Sioux City, Iowa; and Singles Aware of Sioux City, Iowa.  Many other individuals and groups also contributed to the success of SiouxLand Singles.

SiouxLand Singles also published a monthly newsletter called The Forecaster.which was discontinued in January 200l as circumstances made it impossible to continue this publication.

Since its inception, the SiouxLand Singles mission has been to provide a quality social atmosphere for singles to meet and communicate.  Information from other non-profit singles groups has always been provided to any single person wishing to receive it.  We wish to promote a community of singles groups whose first priority is the personal and spiritual growth of the single person.

SiouxLand Singles has created a specific music agenda that gives adult singles of all ages an opportunity to dance to their favorite tunes – no matter whether it’s ballroom dancing, line dancing or 1950s style dancing. Special “mixer” dances include the Waterfall and Snowball as well as the line dances: Strokin’ by Clarence Cater, YMCA by the Village People and the Macarena.  Most of the dance music is provided by DJs. Live bands perform on occasion.

Special highlights include:

The 1997 Christmas dance with music by the popular band, Lockwood.
The 1997 and 1998 Halloween Costume dances.
The 1998 Valentines dance  (Board members fondly remember baking 400 valentine cookies for their guests)
The 1999 New Year’s Eve dance.
And  the best of all - On April 1, 2000, SiouxLand Singles guests witnessed the first marriage proposal at one of the dances.  Two of our board members became engaged. Jason proposed to Julie at our anniversary dance. Their wedding took place on July 21, 2001.

There have been other marriages and those alumni are welcomed back to our dances. Our guests have been loyal and it is to them we owe a debt of gratitude. Board members have come and gone and come back again as the belief that the service provided is important and well received. We came to realize the extent that our dances are needed and appreciated in December 2007.

We, along with other groups have suffered under the weight of rising costs of rental halls, musicians, gas and advertising. The committee had not raised its admission price since April 1997 and hesitated to do so. However, in December 2007 it became apparant that a decision had to be made. It was determined to take a poll of our guests asking how they would feel about an increase in our admission price. It was met with overwhelming support for our doing what we needed to do to keep the dances going. An announcement was made that we would be forced to raise our prices to $10.00 per person. Surprisingly, the announcement meet with cheers and a round of applause from our guests. A response that told us what we are doing by hosting these dances is a necessary and worthwhile effort.

In April 2008 we will be holding our 12th anniversary dance. An hor'duerves buffet will be served and The Senders will be playing to celebrate this occasion.

We want to thank our many friends and guests for their continued support of SiouxLand Singles.  It is YOU who make these dances possible.

Thank you!
